The People of Sapa

Sapa is the capital and main shopping center of the Sa Pa district in Northwestern Vietnam. There are about 8 different minority ethnic groups, with the Hmong people being the largest. Though Sapa city only has about 9,000 people, the ethnic groups swell the district population to over 50,000 people.

According to www.vietnamonline.com, "although each group has its own unique costume with distinctive designs, nearly all the clothes of minority ethnic groups are made from hemp, dyed with a deep indigo blue color and embroidered with decoration..."

No matter where we go the ladies are hard at work, making products or selling products and the men gamble.
At times we are the object of laughing and picture taking on the sly.  We always let people take our pictures and have started wanting pictures of them too.  This lady was mortified we caught her, and reluctant to pose with us but in the end she did!

Kids in ethnic dress, Sapa is the most colorful area with clothing.
