A 3-hour drive from Chiang Mai through the winding mountain roads of northern Thailand brought us to the outskirt of the city of Chiang Rai and our tiny house bungalow on a beautiful property in the village Mueng. It feels like we are back in the Caribbean until we hear voices and realize we don't understand what is being said.
Thanks to Google Translate, we are able to communicate enough to get by--when we remember to use it, that is. If you download the country's library, you can use the app offline. It comes in very handy.
Our host took us around the village to get us familiar with the lay of the land and navigate our way back and forth. We walked to a great local roadside restaurant across from a pond and had a very tasty Thai Tom Yum shrimp dish.
The next morning, we were awakened by a knocking on our door...it was breakfast time. It was after 9 AM...wow. A wonderful breakfast of eggs, fruits, Bok Choy ready for us in the main house.
After breakfast, the question became, how do get to the city? The Uber liked Grab app being used in Southeast Asia has been our go-to for hailing rides and taxis. However, being so far out of the city all we get is "all drivers are busy" message. We walked to the restaurant where we had dinner the previous night to get on their wifi which was saved on our phones, with the possibility of getting a ride since we were close to a university. No luck there either. We got lucky going into an opened cafe, had coffee and communicated with one of the staff via Google Translate. He got on his phone and within 10 minutes, we had a taxi and were on our way into the city for less than $10 for 45 minutes ride the White Temple. We can't stress how pleasantly helpful people have been.
